Obtaining a Marriage License in Orange County, FL: Your Guide to Getting Married (with Legal Ease!)

Congratulations, Orlando lovebirds! You've found your soulmate, picked the perfect venue, and booked the caterer (or maybe you're a tacos and churros kinda couple – no judgment here). But amidst the wedding whirlwind, there's one crucial detail you don't want to overlook: the marriage license. This little piece of paper is the key to unlocking your happily ever after, so let's make sure you get it right!

TL;DR - Get your license up to 60 days in advance, but you have to wait 3 days later to get married.  Bring the license to the ceremony or it can’t start.

Orange County Bliss: Your Roadmap to a License

The good news is, obtaining a marriage license in Orange County, FL is straightforward, like navigating I-4 on a good day (okay, maybe not that smooth, but still manageable). Here's the lowdown:

This is an unofficial marriage certificate in Florida

Where to Go: Head to any of the four Clerk of Courts locations in Orange County.

  • Orange County Courthouse: 425 North Orange Ave., Room 350

  • Apopka branch: 1111 North Rock Springs Rd.

  • Ocoee branch: 475 Story Rd.

  • Winter Park branch: 450 Lakemont Ave.

Website: Click here for all the details at the Orange County Fl Clerk of Courts.

What to Bring: Both you and your betrothed need to be present with valid photo IDs (driver's license, state ID, passport, or military identification). Social Security numbers are required for US residents.

Fee: The fee is $86 or $61 when proof of completing a premarital course is provided.

The Application: You can save time by completing the application online beforehand through the eMarriage Application.  Click here to apply. Or print out the marriage application here and bring it to the office or even fill it out there!  Choices, choices, choices.

But Wait!  There’s a mandatory waiting period.  Florida residents must wait at least 3 days after visiting the courthouse before your wedding date unless you provided proof of a premarital course completion.  If you are from out of state, you are in luck!  There’s no waiting period for you.

Say Cheese!: There's no mandatory photo op, but hey, why not capture the pre-wedding jitters (or maybe it's excitement) with a cute courthouse selfie? It's a fun memory to add to your love story.

Ready, Set, Hitch!: Once everything's in order, you'll get your coveted marriage license. It's valid for 60 days, so plan your ceremony accordingly.

Pro Tip: Don't be that couple forgetting the license at home! Keep it safe and bring it with you on your wedding day. Without it, even the most romantic officiant (ahem, yours truly at Guy Thee Wed!) can't make legal what isn't.

Special Circumstances:

Navigating the Bumps and Twists

While most couples follow the smooth path, some may encounter a few detours. Don't worry, you're not alone! Here are some situations to consider:

  • Previously Married: Were you married before? No biggie, just bring along the date your previous marriage ended.  No documentation needed.

  • Under 18: If you're under 18, there are additional requirements, so be sure to check with the Clerk of Courts for details.

  • Out-of-State Residents: Visiting Orlando for your dream wedding? You're still welcome to get your license here, as long as you plan to tie the knot in Florida.

Sign that License!: After the ceremony, your officiant will sign the license and it is his or her duty to return it to the county in which it was obtained within 10 days. A certified copy will be mailed to the address you provided. This can be a great photo op after the ceremony and before you all greet your guests.  Take the time to take a breath and take a moment just for yourselves!
